The songs in my head January 9, 2009

I don’t really have playlists on my iPod… and the last time I did the mixed tape was in the 80s… but I think that most people have songs playing in our heads.

To give some context, I have been going through a “moving to San Francisco… or maybe not.”  Depends on whether I get a great job offer.  So when I flew down there for the interview, at first my song list looked like this (both by the Mammas & the Pappas):

- California Dreamin’

- San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)

Then I returned to Vancouver to the dreary rain.  I was hopeful.  I thought it went well.  Frankly, I was rather excited.  So the Ramones seemed good.

- (Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go) I wanna be sedated

And time moved on.  And on.  And on.  At a certain point, my songs reverted to one theme…

- Que Sera Sera (whatever will be, will be)

Plus I had an echo in my head from Moulin Rouge… “Everything’s going so welllll…” (when it was clearly about to go all Pete Tong)

Hmmm.  Then I got I finally got the call.  THE CALL.  And then an offer package that was encased in a black, shiny folder that was titled StarWars.  Crazy.  My next song was…

Gosh, I really don’t remember, I was too jolly happy!  I jumped a bit.  Then dutifully went to my photography class beaming, ready to write my final.  Then I went home with California Dreamin’ solidly on repeat in my mind.  Now I am packing and yes – I am now ready to Wear Flowers in my Hair.  Et vous?

So often we race through life, checking off to do lists… running from one meeting to the next… making sure our time is gainfully used… that it is easy to forget to take time out.  A moment to reflect.  A time to watch the world go by, instead of being the world that is going by.  A moment to recharge.

I came across this video.  Watching it made me feel happy and peaceful.  I watched it twice.  It gave me a moment to relax, a moment to reflect, a window into the beauty of the world around.  It made me realise that I probably don’t take time out for just seeing the pleasure of the world around us.  No – I take that back.  The only time I regularly do this is when I run.  That is (masked by my heavy Darth Vadar breathing!) my time for reflection.

It’s been snowing here recently, so several of my runs have been inside.  Yuck!  HGTV is no substitute for running outside.  I love to see the trees, the ocean, the people walking their dogs… the world.  Maybe we all recharge our batteries in different ways, but this is one of my favorite ways to disconnect.  I hope you enjoy the video and take a little time out too.
