Musings about the intersection of art, digital media, and living well.

Amber’s collection of mantras to live by February 3, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — ambermoreywu @ 8:09 am

These phrases are not mine – most of them were created by someone else.  But the collection is mine.   This is how I try to live my life.

It’s easy to be nice
[It really is easy.  And it is so rewarding to be nice to people and send out good energy.  It is so much more effort to be aggressive, obnoxious and rude to people and you release bad energy that bounces around infecting others.]

What comes around goes around
[Duh.  But seriously, sometimes it is the person you help that you least expect something from... who sends back great opportunities in your direction.  Don't judge when you have the opportunity to help someone, just selflessly help.]

Don’t ask, don’t get
[This is huge for me.  A lot of people don't even try for the crazy, biggest thing they could ask for, because they think it can't be done.  I always ask in the nicest possible way... and don't take the first or second or even third no.  There's always more than one way to achieve your goal.  Keep plugging away at the options.  I've been told this makes me a good negotiator.  I figure people want to help me, if I can only present it in a way that makes sense to them.]

If you can’t change your situation, change the way you think about it
[This is huge.  I have done this, when I have been in an ongoing situation that I have had little control over many major elements.  Should I sit and stew and let it all depress me and drag me down?  Or should I accept what I can't change and refocus on other smaller parts of the situation where I can do good, or where I can find something positive that will brighten the situation?]

What you surround yourself with, you will become
[The influences that are around you (TV, radio, books, people, physical environment) all feed into your subconscious, whether you want them to or not.  So surround yourself with what you want to become, and remove the influences that are holding you back.  Change your reading materials, what you watch on TV, who you hang out with in order to embrace the "you" that you'd like to be... or do more of it if you are already on the right track.]

It’s often not about you
[Seriously, when someone is annoyed at you, it may be provoked by something you just said... but they may have been on edge for the last day due to something else and you happened to get into their firing line.  Give someone the benefit of the doubt and don't take it too personally.]

Everyone is doing their very best, at any one point in time.  Each person’s “best” may vary on a day to day basis
[This one can be challenging.  You're annoyed with someone who you think is performing at a substandard level.  But truly, on that day... they really are doing their best.  The next day may be better.  It may not.  Let it go.]

If someone suggests something that sounds crazy… don’t ask why, ask why not?
[This is my optimistic character.  Let's quit our jobs and go live in Paris for a couple of months... Why?  You have secure jobs, a mortgage to pay for, and this will use up your immediate nest egg.  That's the negative approach.  Or... why not?  Can we address all the challenges and still reach for our dream?  Yes we can!]

Dream your life, create your vision
[I've been lucky enough to do lots of cool things, like live in multiple countries, create art,  travel, work in cool jobs etc.  I know that I am fortunate to come from a stable background and have supportive family and friends... but I also attribute each step in my journey with the ability to envision cool and exciting things in my future, and to work towards achieving them.]

What are your mantras to live by?

The songs in my head January 9, 2009

Filed under: Art, San Francisco — ambermoreywu @ 10:05 am

I don’t really have playlists on my iPod… and the last time I did the mixed tape was in the 80s… but I think that most people have songs playing in our heads.

To give some context, I have been going through a “moving to San Francisco… or maybe not.”  Depends on whether I get a great job offer.  So when I flew down there for the interview, at first my song list looked like this (both by the Mammas & the Pappas):

- California Dreamin’

- San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)

Then I returned to Vancouver to the dreary rain.  I was hopeful.  I thought it went well.  Frankly, I was rather excited.  So the Ramones seemed good.

- (Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go) I wanna be sedated

And time moved on.  And on.  And on.  At a certain point, my songs reverted to one theme…

- Que Sera Sera (whatever will be, will be)

Plus I had an echo in my head from Moulin Rouge… “Everything’s going so welllll…” (when it was clearly about to go all Pete Tong)

Hmmm.  Then I got I finally got the call.  THE CALL.  And then an offer package that was encased in a black, shiny folder that was titled StarWars.  Crazy.  My next song was…

Gosh, I really don’t remember, I was too jolly happy!  I jumped a bit.  Then dutifully went to my photography class beaming, ready to write my final.  Then I went home with California Dreamin’ solidly on repeat in my mind.  Now I am packing and yes – I am now ready to Wear Flowers in my Hair.  Et vous?

Time Out January 7, 2009

So often we race through life, checking off to do lists… running from one meeting to the next… making sure our time is gainfully used… that it is easy to forget to take time out.  A moment to reflect.  A time to watch the world go by, instead of being the world that is going by.  A moment to recharge.

I came across this video.  Watching it made me feel happy and peaceful.  I watched it twice.  It gave me a moment to relax, a moment to reflect, a window into the beauty of the world around.  It made me realise that I probably don’t take time out for just seeing the pleasure of the world around us.  No – I take that back.  The only time I regularly do this is when I run.  That is (masked by my heavy Darth Vadar breathing!) my time for reflection.

It’s been snowing here recently, so several of my runs have been inside.  Yuck!  HGTV is no substitute for running outside.  I love to see the trees, the ocean, the people walking their dogs… the world.  Maybe we all recharge our batteries in different ways, but this is one of my favorite ways to disconnect.  I hope you enjoy the video and take a little time out too.

A New Year, new adventures December 31, 2008

Filed under: Paris, Running, San Francisco, Vancouver — ambermoreywu @ 5:24 pm

After running on the treadmill for the past two week because it snowed here in Vancouver for that long (crazy, silly weather), I finally went outside to run today.  Stanley Park was a sheet of ice, so I ran on the road with the cars… it was just good to be outside.

What a year it has been!  For me, running is the best way to clear your head and either listen to and sort out all the chatter… or banish the chatter and just watch the world rush past in a whoosh…

Going to Paris to run the Paris marathon was a turning point for me this April. (more…)

Alternate reality gaming and happiness December 16, 2008

I just came across Jane McGonigal, who is the Lead Game Designer at the Institute for the Future.  She has been heavily involved in designing alternate reality games, i.e. games that are not only on the web, but enter the real world with puzzles and human interaction in real life being necessary to solve the game.  Her previous projects include The Lost Ring, World Without Oil, Cruel 2 B Kind, and I Love Bees; all really interesting, viral stuff.

Some of the simple stuff she has created is just as fascinating as the big budget stuff, like the Ministry of Reshelving, which has the goal of relocating a total of one thousand nine hundred and eighty four copies, across all 50 United States, of George Orwell’s 1984 from “fiction” or “literature” to more suitable sections, like “Current Affairs”, “US Politics”, “True Crime”, or “New Non-Fiction.”  Other book titles were also moved to more “appropriate sections” – take a look at the Flickr site.  What a really cool, thought provoking concept.

I just watched a 1/2 hour podcast, accompanied by the PP slides from her talk – it was reeeally interesting.  Her thread is happiness through technology, and how can we create technology that offers lasting happiness.  Click on View Slideshow to listen to the audio with pictures.

Quote from the talk: Make your technology not only feel good (pleasure) but also do good (engagement) and expose good (meaning).

I am about to move to San Francisco to work for LucasArts.  Jane McGonigal is based there.  As a thought leader in gaming, Jane McGonigal would be a pretty interesting person to meet.
